Different uses of 有 (yǒu)

In Chinese, most characters can be combined with other characters to form new words with new meanings. This time we will see the different uses of the verb  (yǒu).


Different uses of 有


1. (yǒu)
to have / there is / there are / to exist / to be
我有一辆车
Wǒ yǒuyī liàng chē
I have a car

2. 具(jùyǒu)
to have / to possess
To indicate that something or someone has a characteristic or peculiarity
广博的世界历史知识
Tā jùyǒu guǎngbó de shìjiè lìshǐ zhīshì
She has extensive knowledge of world history

3. 占 (zhànyǒu)
to have / to own / to hold / to possess
This definition can refer to dominate or occupy.
强烈的欲本能 
Tā yǒu qiángliè de zhànyǒu yù běnnéng
He has a strong possessive instinct

4. 享 (xiǎngyǒu)
to enjoy (rights, privileges etc)
法官国家所赋予的权力 
Fǎguān xiǎngyǒu guójiā suǒ fùyǔ de quánlì
Judges enjoy the powers conferred by the state

5. 含 (hányǒu)
to contain / including
玉米和马铃薯大量淀粉 
Yùmǐ hé mǎlíngshǔ hányǒu dàliàng diànfěn
Corn and potato contains a lot of starch

6. 拥 (yòngyǒu)
to have / to possess (abstract or very big things)
他现在970家连锁食品店
Tā xiànzài yǒngyǒu 970 jiā liánsuǒ shípǐn diàn
He now has 970 grocery chain
